Is Wazifa Bidah?

Is Wazifa Bidah?

There is a debate whether doing wazifa falls under the category of Bidah or not. Today, in this post, we will analyze the practice of wazifa in that vein.

What is Bidah?

Bidah means innovation in religion matters without any support from Quran or Hadith. It relates to heresy, novelty in practice of any religious duty. For example, performing namaz 4 times a day will be a bidah and not permissible. However, there are some permissible bidhas as well. For example, using technological means to propagate the message and teachings of Islam, is by definition, also a bidah but perfectly permissible. There are two broad categories of Bidah known as Bid'ah Say'iah and Bid'ah Hasana. The first type relates to any new thing or innovation that violates the fundamental teachings of Islam and are not permissible in any way. The latter type relates to good "new" practices that do not inherently challenge or negate the basic Islamic laws of Shariya and morality. A prime example of Bid'ah Hasana is the study of tafsir, fiqh and hadith because it did not exist at the time of Muhammad(SAW).

When Doing Wazifa is not Bidah?

If you consider doing wazifas as a way to establish closer relationship with Allah and dont consider it as Farz, then this is not bidah. In this case, wazifa is a just a form of spiritual practice and asking Allah for favors, similar to when we recite Duas. The core belief is that Allah is the only Guide and Problem solver. We undertake wazifa practice just as a means to be close to Allah. Also, if we are reciting certain Quranic verses with the belief that this recitation will help solve our problems, this is not bidah. The intent and content of wazifa is important to determine whether it falls under the category of Bidah or not.

When Doing Wazifa Becomes a Bidah?

Some people mistakenly place more importance to wazifas than Namaz and other basic Islamic practices such as fasting and giving Zakat. This approach to wazifa practice will make it Bidah. Secondly, doing wazifas that involve polytheistic practices or in simple terms, asking Help for entities/deities other than Allah will not only be a bidah but haram as well.

The best way to make sure that your practice does not fall under the category of Bidah is believing that this wazifa practice is supplementary and not obligatory. Allah has not ordained this for us. Also, our wazifas do not involve an iota of Shirk(polytheism).
