Sania Mirza says she is a proud Indian

Sania Mirza, who recently came under fire after being made brand ambassador of a new Indian state, has said she is Indian and will remain Indian as long as she lives.

Sania Mirza had found herself in a bit of a controversy after she was chosen brand ambassador of a new state, Telangana. BJP, a powerful political voice in India, slammed the decision of Telangana state officials for making the tennis star ambassador of the newly-created state, as one of its key leaders derided Sania as "daughter in law" of Pakistan.

Sania's connection to Pakistan was enough to infuriate the BJP leader K Laxman as he publicly denounced the Telangana decision.

Married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, Sania does not call her Pakistan, though she is entitled to Pakistani citizenship, given her marriage status.
